Representation of the female form
My current project is looking at the representation of women. Women are prominently featured in the art galleries and museum around the world as models but not so much as artists. Our advertising and marketing industry show us the ideal female form - the unachievable Barbie doll! Social media networks continue to push societal norms upon the female.
I am attending to explore how we are shaped by the imagery and the world around us by looking at the expectations placed on women. It will concentrate on why even in the 21st century it feels like women are still not being treated equally. As Faith Wilding in Art Journal states “…feminism still calls for nothing short of a complete overhaul and restructuring of the obsolete sexist and racist educational systems still in place everywhere. We’ve still got a long way to go, baby!” (Art Journal, Vol 58, 1999, issue 4 p29)
